Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features. Note that surfing will be slower.


Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. This software is a free antivirus anti-spyware application.


AVG Anti-Virus – http://free.grisoft.com/

Simply one of the best Anti-Virus around and it is free for home use. This is the only antivirus application that has a toolbar that plugs into Internet Explorer to actually protect you on sites. This is a very fast program that doesn't make the system slow down like some antivirus applications.


avast! Free Antivirus -http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

One of the most popular basic free antivirus applications. Requires free registration.
For Linux and 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.

Ad-Aware Personal remains the most popular anti-spyware product for computer users around the world, with nearly one million downloads every week. This free anti-spyware version provides you with advanced protection against spyware that secretly attaches and takes control of your computer, resulting in aggressive advertising pop-ups, sluggish computer activity, even identify theft through stolen bank details, passwords, and credit card account numbers.
Note that the freeware version does not contain real-time scanning. To obtain a freeware Anti-spyware which contains real-time scanning I recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials (listed above) This is, however, a great application to run on your computer manually on a regular basis.

Tired of dealing with rogue software, spyware and malware? Tired of spending countless hours removing unsolicited software? Sandboxie will let you run applications in a sandbox (a transient storage area) thereby protecting your computer! Excellent for running your web browser or any other application! Easy to use! Cleaners and Erasers

It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Windows 2003 Server and DOS.


Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) -http://www.dban.org/

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy (or CD) that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction. (They have an ISO file available which contains a CD image to easily make a CD).

LINUX based Firewall software. The company sells an enterprise version, but there is a freeware version for home use and a freeware version for corporate. This software is designed to be a firewall between your computer and the Internet. It also alows you to protect your kids web surfing habis by web filtering. You can also access your home network by Roadwarrior VPN through Remote Desktop from anywhere in the world, even your iPhone! This is a great free tool! (Requires an additional computer with two network cards and an understanding of the Linux operating system).


Password Protection

This program allows you to save all your passwords in a secure file. You can then easily retrieve them using only one password.


Security Testing

How secure is your computer? This freeware program checks your computer's security against viruses, spyware and hackers and grades the effectiveness of your protection software (including anti-virus programs, spyware scanners, and firewalls (for Windows).


Spam Blocking

This handy freeware e-mail management program lets you fight back against spammers and e-mail viruses and helps protect your privacy. MailWasher lets you check and manage your e-mails before you download them. You can also use it to bounce e-mails back to spammers, so that it looks as though your e-mail address is no longer valid.
